Diving the Coral Sea

Diver Gorgonia

Is there a better dive spot near Australia that exceeds the beauty and excitement of the Great Barrier Reef? Some diver's think the Coral Sea does just that. Both locations were among the earliest of the world's exotic diving destinations. In fact, the remote Coral Sea's crystal-clear water and pristine reefs were the ultimate targets. The Coral Sea lies more than 322-km (200 miles) out to sea or about 10-km (100 miles) or more beyond the outer perimeter of the Great Barrier Reef. It was the scene of a U.S. victory (1942) that checked the southward expansion of the Japanese forces in World War II. The best way to get there and enjoy the diving is to take a live-aboard. Dive operators will take you out on a trip that lasts from a few days to a week. The remoteness of the sea has protected the ecosystem from being ruined.
