So-called “half-and-half” or “split-level shots” are
among my favorite underwater images to look at; naturally, they’re also among the most challenging. I’ve
tried creating some with my (woefully underpowered) underwater camera, but of course they don’t usually work. To
achieve their eye-popping results, some photographers use photo editing software to merge multiple images into one
glorious picture. Other photographers use special filters to overcome the effects of refraction and the difference in
light intensities. However, photographer
Mauricio Handler does something
simple: he uses the sun.
