Pilot Whales Stranded off New Zealand

After learning about the pilot whales and dolphins that died on Cape Cod recently, I was pleased to see this story in the news. On Tuesday, 110 pilot whales stranded themselves on New Zealands South Island. While the whales lied helplessly for nearly 24 hours, volunteers spritzed them to keep them moist. Finally, rescuers used high tide to push the animals back into the ocean. Although 15 of the whales died, officials claimed the remaining whales appeared healthy despite the ordeal. This part of New Zealand sees frequent strandings by pilot whales, although researchers dont know why.
